Zaglebie hockey club coach Grzegorz Klich has confirmed that the team’s Russian player is being held by Poland’s internal security agency.
Earlier in the social networks of the Prosecutor General of Poland, Zbigniew Zebro, information appeared about the detention of an anonymous Russian athlete on suspicion of espionage, without specifying the details. Later, a teammate of Russian hockey player from Polish club Zaglembe Maxim Sergeyev, on condition of anonymity, confirmed to that the player had been detained in Poland.
– About two or three weeks ago, he was detained by the special services. Previously, we had no suspicions about this. He came to see us before the events in Ukraine and then signed a declaration of neutrality. He behaved normally. We are therefore surprised by this case. Of course, we separate ourselves from his unsportsmanlike activities, we have nothing to do with it,” Sport.fakt.pl quoted the coach as saying.
Media also report that information about hockey player Sergeyev has been removed from Zaglembe’s website.
It is alleged that the evidence collected during the investigation indicates the involvement of a 20-year-old citizen of the Russian Federation in espionage activities. At the moment, the court has chosen a preventive measure for the hockey player – he has been detained for three months. The man faces up to 10 years in prison.
