Former striker for SKA and several KHL clubs Evgeny Artyukhin said that with the Swedish goalkeeper John Mattson St. Petersburg have every chance of winning the Gagarin Cup next season.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper’s contract is designed for one season.
— Mattsson is one of the most talented goalkeepers in our league: tall overall, but at the same time quick and agile. In this he is very reminiscent of Koskinen, with whom the army team won two Gagarin Cups. This is a very good example of point selection, when the team strengthens the position where there are problems. We should not forget about goalkeeper coach Yuri Klyuchnikov, who will now work for SKA – the Petersburg have significantly strengthened the final frontier. With Mattson out the door, SKA have every chance of winning the trophy again in the coming season. To qualify for the cup, the team must first have confidence in its goalkeeper, everyone who has played hockey at any level knows this. And Mattsson will be able to give such a boost to all players, – said Artyukhin “Championship”.
Last season, Mattsson defended the colors of Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg, the Swede played 30 games in the KHL regular season with 91.9% of saved shots, as well as five games in the playoffs (95.4%). Earlier in the KHL, Mattsson played for Dynamo Riga.
