“Ovechkin will beat Gretzky’s record, it’s a matter of time” – Yegor Yakovlev

Defender and captain of Metallurg Magnitogorsk Egor Yakovlev told Gazeta.Ru that it was difficult for him to play against the Washington Capitals captain Alexandra Ovechkina in the NHL.

– Unfortunately, I didn’t play against Evgeni Malkin, but I played against Ovechkin. It’s hard, of course, because Sasha is very prepared physically. It’s hard to fight him. Every season, Ovechkin has a very strong motivation, because he is aiming for the record. Everyone looks at him, rooting for him. He prepares well for each season, and thanks to this, the team is also motivated, helps him as much as possible and thanks to this he is improving,” Yakovlev said.

The Olympic champion said he was confident that Ovechkin would break Wayne Gretzky’s record.

– I think so – Ovechkin can [побить рекорд]and it’s a matter of time. We will all be cheering for it to happen as soon as possible,” Yakovlev said.

Ovechkin is the owner of the Stanley Cup, three-time world champion in the Russian team. The 37-year-old Russian, with 822 goals, ranks second on the NHL’s top scorers list, behind Canadian Wayne Gretzky (894). Ovechkin scored 75 points (42 goals + 33) in 73 regular season games during the 2022/23 season.
