Minister of Sports of the Moscow region: “We will not support the best hockey and football teams at the expense of budgetary funds”

Dmitry Abarenov, the Moscow region’s sports minister, said there were no plans to spend the region’s funds on maintaining top football and hockey teams.

The KHL is played by Vityaz, who plays home matches in Balashikha, as well as Kunlun Red Star, based in Mytishchi since 2020. Moscow Region Khimki flew out of MIR RPL after last season’s results.

– Once upon a time there were four teams from the Moscow region that played in the KHL. Do you think the current representation is optimal?

– Of course, I would like to have a KHL club in each city where hockey is developed. But we have a clear position that professional sports should be primarily private. We will not support the best hockey and football teams at the expense of budgetary funds. In general, our region is represented in all professional leagues: Vityaz and Kunlun Red Star in the KHL, there is also Khimik in the VHL, as well as Atlant, Captain and Russian Knights in the MHL. There are two other women’s teams. By the way, not so long ago, the Moscow region women’s national under-18 team became the champions of Russia, Abarenov said in an interview with the official KHL website.
