“The Federation did not pay anything for the second year, we only receive money from the club” – Shamaev about the salary of biathletes in Romania

biathlete Dmitry Shamaev who has been playing for the Romanian national team since 2021, told how the situation is working with his salary and help from sponsors.

Shamaev started playing for Romania in 2021. Earlier, as part of the Russian junior team, he became the world champion as part of the relay team, and Dmitry is also the winner of the Russian championship.

– What is the salary of biathletes in Romania based on?

We are organized into clubs. There are two main clubs in Romania – Dynamo and Steaua (it’s like our CSKA). And the federation pays separately. True, she did not pay anything for the second year, and we only receive money from our club.

Plus a cash prize?

– I had 2,500 euros in prizes this year (smiles), and I probably spent four or five thousand just for the skis. In the Romanian national team, in principle, all my salary is spent on my training, on the purchase of skis, on field trips.

Traditionally, the training camp in Romania starts at the end of June and I start training from mid-May. Therefore, all logistical and financial costs fall on my shoulders. Flights, hotel, meals – expenses outside Romania, if not with the team, nobody pays me. Staying in Europe for the New Year’s collection is completely different money. In addition, you need to buy skis. So it turns, and in fact, I train and I invest all the money that I earn in me, in the sport.

If you go with a team to Romania, it will be free. After the first term, in December, when everyone goes home, Romanians also go home, but in Romania it never snows at this time. And on the rollers – do not roll, because there is ice on the track. Therefore, they race cross-country skis there, train on the road on rollers and use the ski track. It is important for them to come home, to restart. And I go where there is snow, continue to train on skis, prepare for the next departures.

Now I’m going to a training camp in Romania, let them pay me, that is, accommodation and meals, but tickets at my expense – I went back and forth , I paid a thousand euros. In fact, this is the price of the whole collection.

– Is there help from sponsors there?

— No, biathlon is not interesting there, and it is difficult to do, even if we tried to find sponsors, sports nutrition sponsors. It’s easier to find sponsors in Russia and to race for Romania. Separately, I would like to thank the company that manufactures roller skis in Russia. Now I train on it – usually great, I really like it,” Shamaev told .
