The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (LHJMQ) has announced new safety rules that will ban players from fighting starting the new season.
The rules are published on the league’s website. As noted, now any hockey player who takes part in a fight will receive a strikeout until the end of the game. The hockey player who “incites a fight” will be suspended for one game. A player “declared an aggressor during a fight” will receive an automatic suspension of at least two games.
Players who have been involved in more than one fight during a season, starting with the second fight, will be subject to an additional automatic disqualification in addition to other penalties.
– In order to prevent physical and psychological abuse that may result in minor or serious injury or, in extreme circumstances, death, the QMJHL is responsible for establishing the rules when a fight occurs between two or more people during a game , whether they are players or other team members, the league said in a statement.
According to statistics from the fight-tracking website Hockey Fights, the NHL recorded 0.19 fights per game during the 2018-19 season, compared to 0.6 fights 10 years earlier.
