Olympic champion and three-time Gagarin Cup winner Ilya Kovalchuk enjoyed the native’s outlook “Spartacus” in the new KHL season and talked about the favorites in the fight for the Gagarin Cup.
Kovalchuk started his professional career at Spartak and played for the Moscow team from 1999 to 2001.
– Do you follow your native Spartak and Alexei Zhamnov’s work at the club?
– I am not immersed in club affairs, but we communicate with Alexei Yuryevich, we just saw him the other day. They came from the first training camp, he is happy with the team and the guys who have just joined the team. God forbid, don’t repeat what happened last season and enter the playoffs.
– Yevgeny Svechnikov goes to Ak Bars, the club has already signed Yashkin and Zhafyarov. The big favorite of the season?
– There are a lot of favorites, especially since there will be a crossover playoff in the new season. Kazan has a very good team with veterans and an excellent coach. All cards are in the hands of Ak Bars,” Metaratings.ru quotes Kovalchuk.
Last season, Ak Bars reached the final stage of the Gagarin Cup, where they lost to CSKA 3–4 in the series.
The new KHL season begins on September 1.
