Athletistic/Hockey. Slovak hockey player Martin Gernat, defending the colors of the Lokomotiv club, expressed his position that moving to Russia deprives him of the opportunity to play for the national team. The athlete explained the reasons for his decision. Moreover, he shared his emotions regarding the fact that he could no longer represent the Slovak national team.

“Isn’t it possible to continue playing for the Slovak national team after moving to Lokomotiv? Yes, that’s one of the aspects my family and I discussed before moving. I’m ready to give up to the participation in the national team in favor of our decision on this transfer. It was in addition that I represented Slovakia in the world championships and the Olympics for many years and that was a big part of my career now my goal is to focus on playing for the club and trying to win the Gagarin Cup.

How do I feel about not being able to play for the Slovak national team? There are many talented Slovak players in the KHL who, like me, were denied such an opportunity. This means that young hockey players will have the chance to join the national team. They will be able to take a step forward and gain new perspectives. This will have a positive effect on the team. Over the past three years, our team has worked hard to become one of the leaders. I think Slovakia will continue to build a strong national team,” Gernat said as quoted by the KHL official website.

Recall that most of his sports career, the Slovak hockey player played in the AHL, and also played in the Czech Republic and Switzerland. In the AHL, Gernat played 138 games, scoring 33 points (5+28). In the Czech Republic, he amassed 107 points (30+77) in 189 games. In Switzerland, the defender scored 23 goals and made 37 assists in 103 games.
