“We have lost a brother.” Roman Rotenberg responds to news of 21-year-old hockey player Amirov’s death

SKA Head Coach Romain Rotenberg admitted he had a lump in his throat following news of the death of a 21-year-old hockey player Rodion Amirov.

On Monday, Amirov’s death was announced by agent Dan Milstein. In February 2022, Amirov, then 20, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. In April of the same year, the player attended chemotherapy courses.

– Rodion Amirov is dead … A lump in the throat because of such news. We lost a brother, a young man who could live, play hockey, raise children…

Rodion, you were a great player and a good person! The whole hockey family has prayed for you and done everything for you to live. All our thoughts are with you and your family. Strength and courage to your loved ones. Rest in peace,” Rotenberg wrote on his Telegram channel.

Amirov graduated from Salavat Yulaev. He has 10 goals and eight assists in 79 KHL games. Amirov was selected 15th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft by Toronto. In April 2021, the Russian signed a three-year rookie contract with the Canadian club.
