The Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) and the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) will study the possibility of refusing to organize playoffs in the Western and Eastern conferences, according to the FHR website.
The federation and the league agreed on the structure of the 2022/23 season and also agreed to change the format of the Gagarin Cup qualifiers.
“Cross playoffs, regardless of league geographic division, will become an important tool to increase the level of competition, intensity and standing of the KHL Championship in the eyes of fans and sponsors, which is fully in line recommendations from the Coaches Council to increase the number of principle games that are important to both participants,” the post read.
All ideas after discussion by the joint working group will be presented to the KHL Board of Directors.
In addition, the FHR and the KHL will create a working group, which in the next season will work out options for the further development of the KHL Championship – the Russian Ice Hockey Championship.
It was previously announced that the new KHL season will start on September 1 with an opening Cup match between current champions CSKA Moscow and runners-up Metallurg Magnitogorsk. Teams are expected to play 68 games in the regular season.
