Athletistic/Hockey. Sports law specialist Valery Fedoreev spoke about the potential negative consequences for Russian ice hockey if the decision of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) regarding goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov is not followed.

In July this year, the goalkeeper signed a contract with CSKA, but the IIHF recognized this contract as invalid and imposed a four-month suspension on Fedotov, as well as a one-year transfer ban internationals for the Moscow club. The Army team appealed, and head coach Sergei Fedorov said Fedotov would play in the KHL from September 1, since he signed a contract with the club.

Fedoreev noted: “The Russian Ice Hockey Federation is a member of the IIHF. In the worst case, they could be expelled from the IIHF, which would lead to the fact that the Russian team could not participate in international competitions. In addition, the FHR can be fined up to CHF 500,000. In addition, the FHR may incur financial penalties for each game in which Fedotov appears on the ice – from 50 to 150 thousand francs. The list of possible sanctions is quite long. Although I am not sure that they will be applied, it is theoretically quite possible, because such behavior would be a clear disregard for IIHF decisions,” Fedoreev said as quoted by Gazeta.ru.
