Ice Hockey World Champion Maxime Sushinsky spoke about the decision of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) to follow the verdict of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in the case of the goalkeeper CSKA Ivan Fedotov .
Fedotov is currently under sanctions imposed by the IIHF. As part of the disqualification, the FHR allowed the goalkeeper to play for CSKA only from January 1, 2024, but at the same time approved the military team’s application for the hockey player. The restrictions were imposed due to the goalkeeper’s contract history: he signed a two-year deal with CSKA Moscow as part of the current one-year deal with NHL Philadelphia.
– Of course, the FHR simply had no choice but to ban CSKA from using Ivan Fedotov until January. And what else should she have done if she was in the IIHF? There is a way out of this situation. And it’s not about leaving the federation, but the branch of the KHL. Let it become an independent league like the NHL. The National Hockey League is independent of the ice hockey federations of Canada and the United States and it feels good. I don’t think that in this case the KHL will be isolated.
Now, Russian national teams are deprived of the opportunity to participate in international competitions, but when the restrictions are lifted, the KHL will be able to defend its colors in complete safety, just as its colleagues from across the ocean represent their states. And no one forbids them to do so. And there are no European cups, like in football, so there is something to lose.
It is difficult to understand how CSKA will behave in this situation. We can only guess. Of course, it’s possible the club will say it will release Fedotov on the ice until his appeal to the IIHF is considered. Anyway, we can only observe. But I think the army team will not come into a hundred percent conflict with the FHR.
But Ivan himself can only play hockey and get optimal conditions as soon as possible. Sure, he could go to the NHL, which his disqualification doesn’t apply to, but I have a hard time imagining that. Here you have to ask a question to the guardian himself. More importantly, getting out on the ice regularly is vital for a youngster. In this conflict, I do not take sides, but I support the hockey player, since he has already missed a year. And a person has no other income, quotes RT Sushinsky.
The new KHL season will kick off on September 1 with the Cup opener between CSKA and Ak Bars.
