The National Hockey League (NHL) and the League Players’ Association (NHLPA) intend to change the format of the World Cup in 2025, said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly.
He did not specify what ideas the league was considering, saying only that it would not be a “typical” World Cup, with eight teams divided into two groups.
“We are focused on an alternative version of the tournament that will reflect the unique internationality of our sport. It is in this sense that we are working with the NHLPA to develop something that we can include in the February 2025 calendar,” quotes the Daily Associated Press.
NHL players did not participate in the 2022 Olympics in Beijing; negotiations over the participation of NHL players in the 2026 Games in Italy are underway.
“We hope to implement a regular scenario where players will compete in the World Cup in 2028, the Olympics in 2030, the World Cup in 2032 and the Olympics in 2034,” Daly said.
The NHL previously announced that the tournament would take place in February 2024 in Europe and North America. It was later moved to 2025. The last World Cup was held in 2016 in Toronto.
