Swedish hockey player Press could be suspended from playing for the national team due to contract extension with Severstal

Swedish Cherepovets defender Severstal Robina Press may be suspended from playing for the national team due to the extension of the contract with the Russian club.

On Tuesday, Press signed a new deal with Severstal for one year. In the 2021/22 season, the 27-year-old Swede played 55 games for the KHL team, scoring 21 points (7 goals + 14 assists).

— I don’t want to anticipate the decision that the Board of the Swedish Ice Hockey Association (SIF) will take before the start of the new season. For us and for me personally, there is a big difference between the players who were ready to stay and those who wanted to leave despite the current contract. That’s a completely different question. We know how difficult it is,” quotes Expressen, SIF General Secretary Johan Stark.

The SIF representative called the decision of the press to extend the contract strange.

“We have not spoken to him or any agent, and I cannot be held responsible for his thoughts. It seems strange, especially considering that we spent so much time talking with the lawyers of the IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation), the players themselves and their agents to get our players out, a said Stark.

Press made his debut for Sweden last season and made two appearances.
