Former head coach of the Russian national hockey team Vladimir Pluschev believes that Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin will score between 30 and 40 goals in the new NHL season.
Ovechkin scored 822 goals during his career in regular NHL championships. To beat Wayne Gretzky’s sniper record, the 38-year-old Russian must hit the opponent’s goal 73 times. Last season, Ovechkin scored 75 points (42+33) in 73 regular season games.
— I believe that the number of goals scored by Alexandre this season will directly depend on his physical form and health. I think he is perfectly prepared for this challenge and, given his character, we can count on 30 or 40 goals from him.
Washington is not hostage to Alexander’s NHL record. Ovechkin certainly does not affect the injuries of other hockey players, but as for the rejuvenation of the squad, it must always be carried out competently and taking into account all the circumstances and nuances of the team and the club. If the plan is to carefully integrate young people into the team, that does not mean that everyone needs to be changed en masse,” Pliushchev told RT.
Washington will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday in the NHL’s season opener.
