Plyushchev believes Malkin isn’t getting enough attention because of Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky’s record

Former head coach of the Russian national hockey team Vladimir Pluschev believes the Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeny Malkin not paying enough attention to pursuit of Washington Capitals forward Alexandra Ovechkina behind Wayne Gretzky’s record.

After the victorious match of the NHL regular season against Calgary (5:2), in which Malkin scored 2 points (1+1), he caught up with Alexander Mogilny (473) in the list of the best snipers Russians in NHL history.

Ovechkin has 822 goals in regular NHL championships; the all-time record belongs to Gretzky (894 goals).

“In my opinion, taking into account all the achievements and records of Evgeniy, he is not given due attention due to the increased PR and hype around Ovechkin’s pursuit of the record by Gretzky. The Russian and American press talk about it just as often and arouse interest in this event.

For these reasons, Malkin has been overlooked, even though he is still capable of solving many problems in hockey. Anyway, I consider this a problem exclusively for those who do not realize it,” Pliushchev said, as quoted by RT.

This season, 37-year-old Malkin played three games in the NHL and scored 6 (2+4) points.
