Captain and striker “Washington” Alexander Ovechkin scored the NHL’s first goal of the season and closed the gap on the best sniper in league history, Wayne Gretzky.
The 38-year-old Russian scored Washington’s only goal in the home match against Toronto (1:4). This puck became Ovechkin’s 823rd in the NHL; the striker must score 71 more times before Gretzky’s record. The Canadian hockey player has 894 goals in the NHL.
In total, Ovechkin has one goal and two assists in five games this season.
In the next game, Washington will play New Jersey and Toronto will travel to Dallas.
