Philadelphia is monitoring this situation.
So what do we know so far.
Yesterday morning, after training, 25-year-old Ivan Fedotov was arrested by a mob of 10 people (two in camouflage, the others in civilian clothes) and sent to the conscription office in St. Petersburg.
He remained there for several hours, after which the two-metre goalkeeper was taken to hospital by ambulance as he was unwell.
On May 1, Fedotov’s contract with CSKA ended. On May 7, he signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia. The NHL and Flyers said they are monitoring developments and will not comment further at this time.
The sports rights of the KHL player belong to CSKA, with which Fedotov won the Gagarin Cup in April. But the army club only told a few sentences they learned about it from the St. Petersburg press: “We believe that the competent authorities will settle everything.”
Fedotov studied at Lesgaft and was until recently subject
Thus, Fedotov is suspected of being a malicious escapee from the army.
I started to find out.
2013-2017. Ivan Fedotov played in the Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik system. My sources close to the club did not recall that the goalkeeper had problems with the army, that he had received subpoenas and that he ignored them.
2017-2019. Fedotov played in the Ufa Salavat Yulaev system. Again, the guard had no problem with the army.
2019-2021. Ivan played in the Chelyabinsk “tractor” system, and also no army problems. No one remembered anything about it.
How do KHL clubs protect their players from the military? Usually, the team administrator draws up lists of players, who of them is liable for military service, who studies where. For example, if Fedotov studied at the Bashkir Institute of Physical Culture (BIFK), then he would get a reprieve from the army.
I learned that Ivan Fedotov studied at the St. Petersburg University of Physical Education and Sports named after Lesgaft at the time of the “SU”. And he was just asked to switch to a free schedule, so that studies continued remotely. He was in his fourth year at the time.
That is, it turns out that somewhere before 2018 or 2019, Fedotov was protected by an academic report. And then the reservation ended.
Tkachev was wanted by the Omsk military registration and enlistment office
I must say that the subject of military registration and enlistment offices comes up periodically even among KHL hockey players. For example, in December 2018, Salavat Yulaev striker Vladimir Tkachev told how he had problems with the military commissariat in Omsk. Because of this, he even missed three KHL Championship matches when he returned home and, together with his agent, resolved issues with the selection committee. Solved successfully.
“In general, nothing terrible happened in the history of the military registration and enlistment office,” Tkachev said in an interview with Izvestia. Everything is fine, in working order. How did this story come up with the agenda? I just got put on the wanted list. I haven’t been to Omsk for a long time, and apparently the local military enlistment office lost me. As a result, they contacted me and said I had to appear with them. When I arrived in Omsk, the problem was immediately solved. I passed the medical examination and that’s it.”
CSKA can’t sign Ivan as he belongs to the Flyers
Fedotov successfully played for Traktor in the 2020/21 season, and they even wanted to leave him in Chelyabinsk. But Ivan clearly announced his decision that in 2022, at the end of the contract, he will leave for the NHL. It was no secret. And when Traktor traded Fedotov to CSKA for monetary compensation. With Legionnaire goalkeeper Roman Villa, it seemed very logical.
CSKA also understood that they only had Fedotov for a year. Now the sports rights of the KHL goalkeeper belong to the Moscow Army team. But CSKA might not appear in history with Fedotov until the end of September.
Today, Fedotov, by all hockey rules, is a Philadelphia player. He will become a free agent for the KHL if only the Flyers freeze his contract, put him on the no-show list (begins around September 12), or terminate the contract (which is unlikely – why lose the rights? ), or send Fedotov on loan to the same CSKA.
Otherwise, if Fedotov himself, voluntarily or under duress, now signs a contract with CSKA, it will open such a Pandora’s box that you can forget about the fulfillment of contracts between the KHL and the NHL. As long as they respect each other.
Behind the scenes, the position of the CSKA people is: Fedotov is closed to us, he has an NHL contract, so the interest of our club will be exaggerated.
Many questions to the player’s agent: it seems to be his miscalculation
Former general manager of Salavat Yulaev, and now expert Leonid Weisfeld, correctly told us in an interview: “From my point of view, in such situations, there is clearly room for flaws on the part of from someone. First, from Fedotov himself. Yet he is not a little boy and should know that there is a draft age and this problem needs to be solved. Secondly, from the side of the administration of the club and the agent.
Fedotov spent a year at CSKA! He could easily serve for a year, playing for a KHL club. But, apparently, thoughts were occupied with the Olympics, the Gagarin Cup, Philadelphia. This is all good, but everyday problems also need to be solved in time.
Here it is worth asking about the player’s agent Igor Parashkin, who has dropped calls or has not answered the phone for a day. His client is a hockey player, he can be distracted, not thinking about anything. But the agent is responsible for all domestic matters.
And then a situation arose when 25-year-old Ivan Fedotov was without army armor. It was possible that the military registration and enlistment office was interested in him until July 15, when the appeal was launched. And this possibility played out.
On whose tip? Who benefits? Or is it a coincidence? Or a significant case that there can be no exception for anyone – what is the first goalkeeper of the Russian national team, what is an ordinary conscript? We will see in time.
But Weisfeld is right. How could you not apply for military service in a year in CSKA by closing this number? The initiative comes from the player and the agent, not from the club.
But that was not done. And now Fedotov has earned himself a lot of trouble.
I want to believe that they can be solved. As a hockey player, Tkachev very well understood the subject through his agent, although the military registration and enlistment office put him on the wanted list.
Yes, this is happening in Russia. But if you want to play hockey and not serve in the army, you need to think about armor at least until the age of 27.
