Former Pittsburgh NHL hockey player dies after cutting neck with skate during game

The incident happened during Saturday’s Challenge Cup match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers, for which Johnson played. The match in Sheffield was interrupted in the second period when the 29-year-old hockey player received a cut in the throat with a skate.

Players from both teams formed a circle around Johnson as he received medical treatment on the ice before the screens were installed. A few minutes later, the announcement of the match postponement was announced in the arena and both teams returned to their locker rooms. Johnson was transported to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

During his career, Johnson played in 13 NHL games for Pittsburgh.
