The NHL punished Ottawa by stripping them of the right to select in the first round of the draft due to the situation with Dadonov

The management of the National Hockey League (NHL) punished the club “Ottawa Senators » for the failure of the exchange of the Russian attacker Evgenia Dadonova from Vegas to Anaheim in March 2022.

In 2022, the NHL declared Dadonov’s trade from Vegas to Anaheim invalid due to the fact that the deal violated the no-trade clause included in the Russian’s contract with Ottawa. In the summer of 2021, Vegas acquired the Russian from Ottawa, when the club was under the impression that Dadonov had not submitted to Ottawa in time a list of teams with which he would not wish to trade during the season 2021/22. However, it later became known that Anaheim was on Dadonov’s “prohibited” list.

— The league forfeits Ottawa’s first-round pick in 2024, 2025 or 2026. A club must determine which season it will not exercise a draft pick within 24 hours of the end of that year’s draft lottery . The league will no longer comment on this situation, indicates a message on the NHL website.

Ultimately, Vegas traded the Russian to Montreal at the end of the season. Currently, Dadonov defends the colors of Dallas: in the current championship he played 7 matches and scored 3 (2+1) points.
