Athletistic/Hockey. Washington Capitals forward and captain Alexander Ovechkin shared his thoughts on Nicklas Backstrom’s decision to temporarily put his career on hold due to injury.

“I think everyone is aware of what is happening. We will support Backstrom, we will be with him in this difficult moment. When I saw him in training camp, I thought: ‘Thank God everything “I’m fine”, but yes, it’s not easy. Niklas had surgery and although I understand that he is doing well, but as a player I know that when something hurts and you don’t can’t play to your full capacity, the game becomes almost impossible. Sometimes you have to do it. He missed a few games because of injuries and, you know, it’s tough. He went through tough times for a few years.

Backstrom is a true leader. He spent his entire career with this team. We’ve been playing together since the beginning and now it’s hard to understand what’s going on. But we’re just going to support him and be there for him. We will do everything in our power to help him,” Ovechkin said.

In mid-June this year, the 35-year-old Swede underwent surgery on his left hip and missed the start of the 2022/2023 NHL regular season.
