Johnson was playing in a Challenge Cup match at the Sheffield Arena on October 28 when he was cut on the neck by the skate of 31-year-old Sheffield Steelers player Matt Petgrave. The collision, seen by 8,000 spectators, occurred 35 minutes after the start of the match. .

Johnson briefly regained his pulse in the ambulance, but later died at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. His girlfriend Ryan Woolf, who moved with him to Nottingham for the 2023/2024 season, was also present at the hospital.
