The German Hockey League has introduced compulsory neck protection for players and referees.

The German Hockey League has required all players and referees to wear neck protection, the league’s press service reports.

— Starting January 1, 2024, neck protection will become mandatory in the league. And all players and officials must wear this protection to avoid serious neck injuries, the press release specifies.

Earlier, former Pittsburgh hockey player Adam Johnson died after cutting his neck with a skate during a game in the United Kingdom.

The incident happened during Saturday’s Challenge Cup match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers, which Johnson played for. The match in Sheffield was interrupted in the second period when the 29-year-old hockey player received a cut in the throat with a skate. The doctors could not save him.
