On Sunday night, Washington defeated the New York Islanders with a score of 4 to 1. In the first period, Ovechkin scored a goal with a shot from the left faceoff circle and ended his six-game scoreless streak beginning. In the end, Ovechkin scored into an empty net. Thus, the Russian repeated the record of Canadian Gretzky, who also scored 56 goals into an empty net during his career.
This season, Ovechkin has scored four goals and provided seven assists.
Ovechkin has scored 826 career goals in regular NHL championships. The Russian ranks second on the league’s list of best snipers, behind Wayne Gretzky’s 68 goals (894).
