Police investigate death of former Pittsburgh hockey player Adam Johnson , a man was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. This was reported by the South Yorkshire Police press service.
The tragedy occurred on October 28 during Saturday’s Challenge Cup match between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers, for which Johnson played. The match in Sheffield was interrupted in the second period when the 29-year-old hockey player received a cut in the throat with a skate. Players from both teams formed a circle around Johnson as he received medical treatment on the ice before the screens were installed. A few minutes later, the announcement of the match postponement was announced in the arena and both teams returned to their locker rooms. Johnson was taken to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.
— On Tuesday, November 14, detectives arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter. He is currently in police custody.
An autopsy confirmed Johnson died from a fatal neck injury. “Our officers support Adam’s family and have asked that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.
Police also asked the public to “refrain from comments and speculation that could interfere with the process.”
During his career, Johnson played in 13 NHL games for Pittsburgh.
