“Our federation has failed in the sense that it elected the wrong person as president of the IIHF.” Fetisov – about the head of the IIHF Tardif

Double Olympic hockey champion Vyacheslav Fetisov says that Luc Tardif is not doing his job as president of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF).

— If the head of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) were now a person like René Fasel could it repair the geopolitics of sport?

— It seems to me that this guy (the current president of the IIHF, Luc Tardif), took the wrong position. Especially in such difficult times. Yes, hockey is the most promising game on the planet. Of course, a completely different manager should be in charge.

But I think our federation has failed in that it elected the wrong person as president of the IIHF. Huge sums of money were spent to organize René Fasel’s farewell match. And now we see what we see. He is quite weak. Opportunistic, nothing. I talked to him once and realized that in this difficult period, Tardif was the worst option that could exist.

And after? I’m not even trying to delve into that. We are tired of our own problems. At that time, I would pay more attention to the development of national hockey, from the smallest to the KHL. And the fact that the IIHF has a new president will not automatically improve the quality of hockey. We should therefore not blame those who do nothing internationally.

They are not independent people today. But we must seriously invest in changing the domestic situation. Well, a new regular Tardif will appear. In any case, sooner or later the situation will change. And we must be ready to enter the international arena and dominate, as we once did in the 70s and 90s,” a correspondent reports Fetisov’s words.

The IIHF suspended the Russian and Belarusian teams from participation in competitions under its auspices at the end of February 2022. Earlier it became known that the IIHF provisionally included the Russian team among the participants in the group stage of the Olympic Games of 2026, which will take place in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo (Italy).
