Lawyer Ekaterina Gordon believes that the former Moscow goalkeeper CSKA Ivan Fedotov has no privileges that negate his military duty.
On Friday July 1, 25-year-old Fedotov was arrested in St. Petersburg on suspicion of escaping military service. The hockey player requested medical assistance at the assembly point of the military registration and enlistment office, after which he was taken to Botkin Infectious Diseases Hospital. Then the player was sent for further examination to the military medical academy and then to the naval hospital. Later, Fedotov’s lawyer Alexei Ponomarev reported that his client had an exacerbation of gastritis against the background of a nervous breakdown. As it became known from , the athlete is currently in the hospital of the Ministry of Defense in Severodvinsk.
– There are two points. Of course, there is a hockey intrigue associated with his career, but I don’t know the reasons why he didn’t do his military service. Even a successful career in sports is not a privilege for any man in Russia. If we find out he has grounds for deferment or denial of military service, then let’s talk, everything else is law. There are emotions, and there is a law. We must comply with it even in such cases.
I have a question for the Russian Hockey Federation (FHR), why weren’t lawyers and agents busy with the issue of Fedotov’s military duty? We know the tricks that athletes resort to, some of them with scientific degrees from different universities are listed, but do not go. There are legal grounds that apply to eligible athletes. It would be possible to solve the problem, but for some reason, for the moment, FHR turns a blind eye, before a conflict arises. It doesn’t negate his military duty, it shouldn’t be a privilege. Gastritis can also be a legal trick, Gordon said on the show “There’s a Subject!” on MatchTV.
Last season, Fedotov won the Gagarin Cup with CSKA and the Olympic Games silver medalist. He was recognized as the best goaltender of the season in the KHL. On May 7, the 25-year-old goaltender signed with the Philadelphia Flyers of the NHL.
