He is currently a free agent. Kovalchuk, being part of Avangard, won the Gagarin Cup in the 2020/2021 season, after which he was left without a team. He missed last season but has not announced his retirement.

Kovalchuk graduated from Spartak, where he made his professional debut in 1999 and played until 2001. The hockey player is a two-time world champion and Olympic champion.
