Olympic champion Ilya Kovalchuk entered into a contract with “Spartacus” until the end of the 2023/24 season, according to the Moscow Hockey Club website.
On Tuesday, during the KHL regular season match against Capital Dynamo, Spartak announced the return of the 40-year-old hockey player to the team. Kovalchuk will wear number 71 for the Muscovites.
— One of the most successful students of the club in recent years returned to his native Spartak after 22 years of a great career. The striker has signed a contract until the end of the season, the red and whites said in a statement.
Kovalchuk last played in the KHL in late April 2021, when he won the Gagarin Cup with Avangard Omsk. He also played in Russia for Ak Bars Kazan, Khimik near Moscow and SKA Saint Petersburg, with whom he twice won the Gagarin Cup. Overseas, the forward played for the Atlanta Thrashers, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings, Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals.
As a member of the Russian national team, Kovalchuk became the 2018 Olympic champion and bronze medalist at the 2002 Games. He also has two victories at the world championships.
