On Wednesday, Spartak announced the signing of 40-year-old Kovalchuk to a contract until the end of the 2023/24 season.

“I think it’s great for the league as well.” This is also a huge plus for Spartak, and it is a joy for Ilya himself. We communicate, I see how he prepares, how he wants to play. Ilya rested and is looking forward to fighting with renewed vigor. His talent cannot be taken away, he proved everything to everyone a long time ago. Kovalchuk brought many benefits to all of Russian hockey, played abroad at a high level and won the Olympics. A star – and when he’s done, we’ll call him a legend. “And now let’s call Ilya a legendary star,” Kamensky said, as quoted by Championship.
