Washington Capitals on the official website announced a charity auction, the proceeds of which will go to the construction of an ice rink named after the Russian striker Alexandra Ovechkina .
Among the lots are pucks and plaques with Ovechkin’s autographs, as well as 26 jerseys with the Russian’s number 8, which Capitals hockey players wore after the game against Columbus in March. The Capitals then held a ceremony honoring Ovechkin, who surpassed Gordie Howe last December as the greatest sniper in NHL history.
The profits will be used to finance the construction of an ice rink as part of the “Legacy of Alexander Ovechkin” project. The exact location where the facility will be located is not yet known; it could be Washington, Maryland or Virginia. The online auction ends on December 15.
Ovechkin, 38, is the second-highest scorer in league history with 827 goals. According to this indicator, he is second only to Wayne Gretzky, who has 894 goals. The Russian is 67 goals away from the Canadian striker’s record.
