Olympic champion Egor Yakovlev commented on the striker’s decision Ilya Kovalchuk resume his hockey career.
The 40-year-old’s contract with Spartak runs until April 30, 2024.
– There is a break coming. How tired are you from such an intense schedule and what are your rest plans?
– Of course, we are tired. It will be necessary to unburden yourself psychologically, above all. We need to rest our heads and start a new winning streak, get back to our game.
— Are you surprised that Kovalchuk resumed his playing career two years later?
– I’m not surprised at all. With your health, your desire and your motivation, you can still play and play. So it was planned. It was only a matter of time,” Yakovlev said, as quoted by Metaratings.ru.
Kovalchuk last played in the KHL in late April 2021, when he won the Gagarin Cup with Avangard Omsk. He also played in Russia for Ak Bars Kazan, Khimik near Moscow and SKA Saint Petersburg, with whom he twice won the Gagarin Cup.
