CEO”Avant-garde » German Chistyakov said that the Omsk club is in favor of returning to the previous format of the limit of foreign players in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
On Friday, a meeting of KHL club leaders took place in St. Petersburg. From August 1, 2023, by decision of the Russian Ministry of Sports, the limit on foreign players in the league has been increased. Previously, Russian clubs could include up to five foreign players in their application for matches; now the limit is only three foreigners.
— It was interesting to talk with colleagues from other clubs, with the leaders of the Russian Hockey Federation and the KHL. The meeting itself was dynamic, no decisions were made, but we were informed of the results of the task force and the league’s immediate plans.
Important topics for us are the limit on the number of foreign players, a number of proposals aimed at regulating the number of player transfers, changing the championship calendar in the 24/25 season, additions to the rules for accounting for salary cap and rules relating to transfers between clubs.
We are in favor of returning the limit to five foreign players, but I think it will not be easy to change the existing format, since this is an exclusive competence of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation. We have to try, the league announced that it would work in this direction with the Ministry of Sports.
In the very near future, we intend to propose to the league to establish regular meetings of the industry, for example of the commercial departments of the clubs, the marketing departments, the financial directors. It is important and necessary for us to communicate, share experiences and borrow work practices. We can’t just focus on ourselves, we’re doing one thing: growing professional hockey. Each club has interesting cases that are useful to discuss and then apply in their work,” Chistyakov quotes the Avangard website.
