The National Hockey League (NHL) has proposed a North American city as the site of the 2026 Olympic hockey tournament in Italy, said Darren Dreger, an insider.
He did not elaborate on details, noting that at the moment this option is unlikely.
Italy is under pressure as it tries to complete construction of its main Games venue. They also have another venue available, maybe they will choose another Italian city if the main venue is not ready, for example Turin, Dreger said on TSN.
Dreger recalled that the NHL had already made a similar offer, but it was not accepted, “so again (it’s) doubtful, but possible.”
Earlier, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman expressed concern about the delay in the construction of Olympic facilities for the 2026 Olympics, emphasizing that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Games organizing committee are responsible of this question.
The Olympic Games will be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo from February 6 to 22, 2026.
