“I crossed out orders in my head: if this one doesn’t work, then another one. And so we reached the 10th peak. The best Russians in the NHL Draft

— Pavel, how cool is this day?

– Just awesome! It happens once in a lifetime.

– How did you arrive in Montreal, where the repechage took place?

– And I did not fly from North America, after the season I stayed there. He trained in Florida and Arizona with Auston Matthews coach Boris Dorozhenko. So no problem!

– How many interviews have you had with NHL clubs?

– Before the repechage, there are different physical tests, it’s called Combine. There, I had talks with 27 clubs. Then I was also tested. The hardest part was revving the bike for endurance. You can be very well prepared, but when you’re spinning as much as you can in an oxygen mask, it’s not easy.

– Did you have the feeling that Anaheim could choose you?

— Yes, we had a good conversation with them.

— During these interviews, there are some unusual questions. Which surprised you?

– Well, I saw how much everyone was discussing the matter recently, when the guy was asked: “Do you want to take five dollars in the street or 50 dollars in the toilets?” That’s what I was asked too. Apparently this is a standard question.

– When one player after another was called up for the repechage, what did you think?

“There were a few teams that had final interviews right here in Montreal a few days before the draft. I had a rough idea and I crossed out commands in my head: if this one doesn’t take, then the other one can. And so we reached the 10th peak.

– And so they called you “Anaheim.” What did you feel ?

– I was shaking all over my body. The main thing was not to fall on stage. I didn’t think of it. The emotions were very strong.

Tell us about your hockey journey.

– I studied at CSKA school, then in the 2016/17 season I moved to Dynamo Moscow. It was a new stage in my development.

– From Dynamo you, Nikita Chibrikov, Daniil Lazutin were exchanged to SKA for veteran Dmitry Kagarlitsky.

– Initially, I had planned to leave for North America. This exchange came to nothing.

– Have you always been inclined to score a lot of points in attack?

— On the contrary, it depended more on the system. It’s important to be trustworthy so you can create offensively. I felt the coach’s confidence in Saginaw.

Is there a player in the NHL that you particularly follow?

– I try to follow all the defenders, to take a little from each one.

Is it realistic for you to play in the NHL next season?

– I think it’s real. But it takes a lot of work. Now the team will write a training plan for me.

– Is it cool to not only go to a good club, but to California?

– This is amazing! What else can you say? By the way, I was there – I trained for two months during the covid season at the Gold Star training base in Anaheim. The agency made sure that I approached the draft in perfect condition.

– You managed to visit the champion yacht with Kucherov, Sergachev, Vasilevsky. How are the emotions?

– Excellent! I saw day one how it can be when you go for your NHL goal and win the Stanley Cup. Granted, I didn’t dance with the guys under ‘Hands Up’. To do this, you must become a champion yourself.
