The first goal of the match was scored by the visitors in the eighth minute of the first half. Luke Glendenin scored on a pass from Victor Hedman. Early in the second period, Washington managed to tie the score thanks to Anthony Mantha, who scored the puck after passes from Nick Jensen and Alexei Protas.

Extra efforts from both teams failed to produce goals and the game ended in a shootout, with the Tampa Bay Lightning winning. Hedman made the decisive shot.

Russian forward Evgeny Kuznetsov converted his shot, while Alexander Ovechkin failed to get past Tampa goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. During the match, Vasilevskiy made 32 saves.

After this meeting, the Tampa Bay Lightning rose to eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings, gaining 39 points. The Washington Capitals have the same number of points, but are in 7th place.
