Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeny Malkin said he was considering the former Detroit Red Wings forward Sergei Fedorov the best Russian hockey player in history.
Malkin scored a double Wednesday in the NHL regular season game against the New York Islanders (7-0). For the 37-year-old Russian, these are the 483rd and 484th goals in the NHL. According to this indicator, Malkin was ahead of Fedorov (483) and took second place in the number of championship goals among Russian hockey players. Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin tops the list with 828 goals.
— First of all, I want to say that I consider him the best Russian player of all time. He’s a very good hockey player, very intelligent. This is a very important achievement for me, you know? I know it’s just numbers, but I mean I can still score. It’s very important to me,” Malkin told the NHL website.
Malkin made his NHL debut in October 2006 and won the Stanley Cup three times with the Penguins.
Fedorov also played in the NHL for Anaheim, Columbus and Washington.
