Before “Toronto » John Tavares commented on the fact that the Russian goalkeeper Ilia Samsonov was offered for waiver draft by the club.
The fact that the Russian was placed on waivers and could join any NHL club within 24 hours was revealed on Monday. Then, a number of sources reported that Samsonov had gone through the draft process and no clubs were interested in his services. Thus, the goalkeeper will continue his career in the AHL team “Toronto Marlies” – the farm club of the Maple Leafs.
“We all sympathize with Sammy (Samsonov’s nickname – Editor’s note) because of what happened. As a team and personally, everyone is very disappointed that in most matches we could have played better… We love him as a teammate. So we are all very worried about this,” quotes journalist Terry Koshan on social media.
Samsonov left Washington to move to Toronto in 2022. The 26-year-old Russian’s current contract runs until the end of the 2023/24 season. This season, the goalkeeper has played 15 games, and Toronto has lost the last four games with the Russian. The 26-year-old goalkeeper averaged 3.94 goals per game and stopped 86.2% of shots. On the eve of the waiver draft decision, Samsonov missed 6 goals in the match against Columbus (5:6 OT), stopping 15 of 21 shots.
