The head coach “Toronto » Sheldon Keefe expressed hope that the Russian goalkeeper Ilia Samsonov will remain on the team after going through the waiver draft process and transferring to the farm club.
On Sunday, it was reported that the Maple Leafs placed Samsonov on waivers. In 24 hours, no club showed interest in his services. Thus, the goalkeeper will continue his career in the AHL team “Toronto Marlies” – the farm club of the Maple Leafs.
“From my point of view, I hope he corrects the situation and stays with us.” There is a plan that we can continue to work with him and, frankly, it will be a continuation of what is happening here. He needs to get out of this situation so he can just focus on himself and his game. He’s a good goalie, he showed good hockey several times in the game for our team. We have to do everything we can to try to get him back to that,” Keefe told the NHL website.
Samsonov left Washington to move to Toronto in 2022. The 26-year-old Russian’s current contract runs until the end of the 2023/24 season. This season, the goalkeeper has played 15 games, and Toronto has lost the last four games with the Russian. The 26-year-old goalkeeper averaged 3.94 goals per game and stopped 86.2% of shots.
