General Manager of the NHL club “Toronto Maple Leafs » Brad Treliving spoke about the situation with the team’s Russian goaltender Ilia Samsonov .
On Sunday, it was reported that the Maple Leafs placed Samsonov on waivers. In 24 hours, no club showed interest in his services. Thus, the goalkeeper will continue his career in the AHL team “Toronto Marlies” – the farm club of the Maple Leafs.
— Samsonov was sent to the Toronto Marlies. He’s not practicing and has no plans to play for the Marlies at this point, but we’re taking this week to give him some time to be alone. He will work with the Marlies goaltending coach, development team and off-ice staff.
In my opinion, much of what we see affects his psychological state. It’s difficult to sort out the physical and maybe technical side when there’s so much going on with him. We try to take the pressure off, give him more support and give him a week to reset.
We have guys who have proven to be good goalkeepers. We are working with Ilya to return it to its previous form. This phase tests the depth of our list. We’re going to work and try to make sure our guys are as good as possible,” Treliving told the NHL’s official website.
Samsonov left Washington to move to Toronto in 2022. The 26-year-old Russian’s current contract runs until the end of the 2023/24 season. This season, the goalkeeper has played 15 games, and Toronto has lost the last four games with the Russian. The 26-year-old goalkeeper averaged 3.94 goals per game and stopped 86.2% of shots.
