Guardian of the Ak Bars Amir Miftakhov in an interview with Metaratings.ru compared North American hockey with Russian.
– In terms of psychology, you have become more resistant to stress. How is it shown?
– I became much easier to understand all things. I don’t bother with trifles. Any mistakes or defeats – I draw conclusions differently, not like before. Perhaps this is what distinguishes hockey in Russia and America. High responsibility both there and here, but if you make a mistake here, you might think, “What’s going to happen now?” And there it is clear that nothing will happen to you – they will help you fix the error. You play further and only remember tomorrow, you talk to the coach and, going to the next game, you already know how to act.
What was the influence of the North American mentality? Don’t choke, positive…
– It’s not that they don’t choke. Everywhere has its pros and cons. What I love about there is that I spent every training session with a smile, I was recharged by my partners. Even if I don’t play, I’m still not upset, I think I’ll train, show myself well and play the next game.
You don’t think about superfluous things, every new day you give yourself completely. You’re being watched, but it’s like they aren’t. There is a program, you run it. It’s up to you whether you want to do this or not. Feel yourself, learn to understand your body.
– What are the fundamental differences between hockey itself in Russia and North America? How was the transition from Russian hockey to North American hockey, given its difficult specificities?
– There are strong differences. In practice, we felt that the guys were asked to throw from all positions. Not that they asked, they have such hockey – they really can quit and do something unusual at any time. It looks like you can go to the far post – he just picks up and throws.
– Do you feel that hockey in North America is more performance-oriented?
– They try to make it more spectacular and to have more goals. Reduce the form of goalkeepers, the rules are changed. It seems to me that the game is harder than in Russia. There are such blows, power moves, after which there is no dismissal, and in Russia you can be fined “5 + 20” for this, and more until the end of the season. I think hockey is more spectacular there, but in the KHL, it seems to me, hockey has become more interesting. I watched both the regular season and the playoffs, and there were more goals – more for our hockey.
Miftakhov spent last season in the Tampa system. The goaltender has played 22 games in the American Hockey League (AHL), averaging 89.1% shooting at a 3.03 reliability ratio, and 5 games in the ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) , averaging 92% shooting at 2.23 odds.
