Spartak forward Ilya Kovalchuk will be in optimal shape by the end of the championship, but now he has proven that he can play effectively, even after missing two and a half years, said the former hockey player of the KHL teams Nikita Shchitov.
Kovalchuk signed a contract with Spartak in December. The 40-year-old forward has not played professional hockey since winning the Gagarin Cup with Avangard as captain in April 2021. This season, Kovalchuk has played in ten KHL games, in which he scored four goals and delivered an assist.
– Naturally, it was clear that by the end of the championship Kovalchuk would be in better shape. The goal that Ilya scored against Ak Bars confirms that he is an excellent sniper and his skills have not disappeared. Kovalchuk showed an excellent example that even after missing two and a half years, while maintaining his form, you can benefit the team at a high level of the Russian championship, Shchitov told RB Sport.
