“I fundamentally disagree with Kovalchuk taking someone’s place at Spartak” – Filatov

Former Russian youth team striker Nikita Filatov did not agree with the opinion that the attacker “Spartacus” Ilya Kovalchuk is not able to provide results and takes the place of another hockey player in the team.

The Moscow club announced in early December the signing of a contract with 40-year-old Kovalchuk. This season in the KHL, the forward played 10 matches and scored 5 (4+1) points.

— My position regarding Kovalchuk remains unchanged. I fundamentally disagree with the fact that Kovalchuk “does not step down” and takes someone else’s place. Everyone expects a lot from him. But it seems to me that he is fulfilling the role assigned to him. Stop blaming one player for defeats.

It’s not tennis. Ilya is not a goalkeeper who can be blamed for key mistakes. He plays pretty well. Naturally, it takes him some time to adapt, to get used to the rhythm. Two years is a decent break. The situation at Spartak will have to be assessed when the leaders return to office: Poryadin, Maltsev, Morozov and Loktionov. When they have an optimal composition, then it will be possible to talk about something,” Filatov said, as quoted by RB Sport.
