On the evening of Friday, January 26, SKA St. Petersburg and CSKA Moscow will face each other in the regular KHL championship. The military derby will take place for the fifth time this season. In the previous four matches, one team won – SKA St. Petersburg. Will the capital’s super club be able to break this series of unsuccessful matches against their teammates today?
Both teams have virtually assured their participation in the Gagarin Cup. It would be more correct to say that SKA will definitely play there, but the Capital Army team still needs to win a few matches so that the ninth team in the Western Conference does not catch up with them. But something else is interesting: if both teams remain in the positions they currently occupy in the standings, then in the first round of the playoffs they will face each other head-to-head.
However, it is too early to talk about the final top eight places of SKA and CSKA. For example, the men of the St. Petersburg army continue to fight for leadership in the division, in order to be able to finish in one of the first three places. For their teammates from the capital, everything is a little more complicated. Sergei Fedorov’s team is unlikely to make it into the top 4, unless Spartak frankly fails at the end of the regular season. So, at best, the men of the Moscow army are in fifth place, but there is still room for improvement. It is worth noting that CSKA has lost three of its last five matches, while SKA, on the contrary, has won three victories in its last five matches.
This season, Roman Rotenberg’s team has beaten the capital’s super club four times. SKA’s last two victories date back to December last year. Moreover, the last visit of CSKA to St. Petersburg, a little over a month ago, left extremely unpleasant memories for Muscovites, as they lost with a score of 2:6.
