Columbus forward Laine to attend NHL player assistance program

Finnish striker Columbus Blue Jackets Patrick Laine indefinitely due to his membership in the National Hockey League Player Assistance Program (NHL ).

The support program helps players treat their addiction to alcohol or drugs, as well as various psychological problems.

— Patrik Laine participated in the NHL Player Assistance Program. He will be unavailable at the club for an indefinite period while he receives treatment. Under the terms of the joint program between the NHL and the League Players’ Association, he will return to the club when program administrators clear him to participate in competitions, the club said in a statement.

“Patrick has our full support and our only concern is his well-being.” Out of respect for Patrick, we will have no further comment,” Columbus general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen said.

This season, Laine, 25, has played 18 matches in which he scored 6 goals and made 3 assists. Laine was selected second overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. As a member of the Finnish youth team, the forward became a world champion (2016) and on Laine’s national team he won silver at the World Cup (2016).

Previously, Colorado’s Russian forward Valery Nichushkin, also out indefinitely, took advantage of the NHL’s player assistance program.
