Head coach of St. Petersburg SKA Romain Rotenberg told that the club supports the current limit on foreign players in KHL .
On Thursday, a cooperation agreement was signed between the administration of the Krasnogorsk urban district and the SKA Academy. The agreement was signed by Rotenberg and the head of the municipal district, Dmitry Volkov. In December 2022, the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation approved a change in the limit for foreign players in the KHL. From the 2023/24 season, clubs will not be able to include more than three foreigners in their squad for the match.
— In December, the KHL held a vote of team leaders on foreign players. Does SKA support a limit of three or five foreigners?
— At SKA we are in favor of a limit of three foreign players per club, because we believe that all these guys who study and play in Krasnogorsk will be able to play in the KHL in the future. What if we took a stranger in their place? The Russian will then no longer be able to play and will be forced to leave for North America.
I am sure that the Russians will succeed – there is an example of our SKA players, or look at the Torpedo stars. We must raise our own! We believe in our guys! Which strangers will you invite? The strong do not come to us. Take guys from the AHL? Everyone there has already been raked. In principle, there is no one else who would be willing to come to us. Three foreign players are an absolutely balanced number for everyone. Including for the development of young players,” Rotenberg told .
