President of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Luc Tardif said the organization’s board of directors would meet next week to discuss Russia’s status in international competitions, Sportsnet reports.
The IIHF president told a news conference in Toronto that the council must first decide whether Russia will be able to participate in the 2025 World Championships in Sweden and Denmark.
The IIHF will also need to determine Belarus’ status before qualifying for the 2026 Olympics.
By decision of the International Hockey Federation, the Russian national team was suspended from participation in tournaments under the auspices of the IIHF due to the situation in Ukraine. The Russian team will miss the next 2024 World Cup.
Earlier it became known that National Hockey League players will participate in the 2026 and 2030 Olympic Games.
