Former Moscow hockey player “Spartacus” and St. Petersburg SKA Maxime Rybine believes that the public appreciated the performance of the Russian goalkeeper New York Rangers Igor Shesterkin at the National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Game.
The team of Toronto forward Auston Matthews, with Shesterkin in the lineup, defeated the team of Canadian forward Edmonton Connor McDavid and became the winner of the All-Star Game. The Russian played a period and stopped 7 out of 10 shots.
— We cannot deceive the spectator: if he applauds you, it is because he liked your performance. Was it a little easier for Shesterkin to prove himself through his goaltending role? Hard to say. The speeds here are slightly different, but the goalie is trying too, he didn’t come and get the pucks in his basket and leave. Everyone strives to experience positive emotions.
I would still answer that he is one of the best at the moment. We have excellent goalkeepers: the same Vasilevsky, Bobrovsky, Georgiev, Sorokin, Kochetkov. I don’t want to forget anyone. They’re all cool in their own way. The only difference is the style and the teams they play for. It’s very cool that the top positions in the NHL are now occupied by Russian goalkeepers, it’s been a long time since we had that,” Rybin told RT.
This season, Shesterkin, 28, played in 32 NHL regular season games, in which he stopped an average of 89.9% of shots.
