In January, Siberia suffered four technical defeats for violating the limit imposed on foreign players at the start of the current KHL season. Defender Fedor Gordeev was recognized by the league as the fourth foreign player and was therefore ineligible to play. Later, the FHR awarded Russian sports citizenship to Gordeev and a legal dispute arose.
According to the KHL regulations, a player’s sports citizenship for the season is determined at the time of the hockey player’s application and does not change until the end of the current season. Therefore, following the results of the investigation, the Joint Disciplinary Chamber of the KHL-FHR decided to reject Sibir’s candidacy.
After KHL sanctions, Sibir fell out of the playoff zone. In 63 matches, Novosibirsk has scored 60 points and is in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings. Now the “snowmen” are four points from the playoff zone. Siberia has five matches remaining until the end of the regular season.
