Athletistic/Hockey. Former coach of the Russian national team Vladimir Plyushchev expressed his views regarding the decision of the coaching council of the Russian Hockey Federation, which spoke out against increasing the limit for foreign players.

“There are two opposing points of view here, which have their own logic. The KHL, or rather the majority of its clubs, is asking to relax the limit, which indicates a lack of quality domestic players. However, the question it also depends on the efficiency of the functioning of our hockey academies, which receive significant investments.

On the other hand, the FHR understands that the more foreign hockey players there are, the fewer opportunities there are for young Russian players. Some supporters defend the interests of commercial clubs, others those of Russian hockey.

It is unknown who will be stronger in the end and how the limit problem will end. This is where communications, lobbying, etc. will probably come into play. It is important to decide in which direction we go,” Pliushchev said in an interview with RIA Novosti Sport.

Recall that we learned earlier that 15 Russian clubs out of 20 voted to increase the limit. The league has indicated that it considers a quota of five foreign players to be optimal for Russian KHL teams.

  • The FHR coaching council unanimously voted against increasing the maximum number of foreign players in the KHL.
